CyberSource's research showed that more than 33% of those surveyed knew somebody who had suffered some form of online fraud. Those who shopped online commented that they always take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their computers when buying at online stores. Nearly 70% remarked that they had increased their security of their credit cards online by using services such as MasterCard SecureCode, or Verified by Visa. These additional safeguards require that shoppers enter a further password together with their card details to verify their security details before transacting the purchase. The secure padlock sign in the browser window footer is also very well recognised; 86% of online shoppers said they looked for this mark of security (an https website) before entering their personla details and making their a purchase. Simon Stokes, Cybersource MD, stated: "With the abundance of media coverage about security breaches, it is not surprising that some shoppers are frightened off. The challenge to the industry is educating consumers to shop safely, to minimise their exposure to fraud. As more people gain access to the Internet and realise the convenience, value, and safety of shopping online, I believe we'll see a higher percentage trying and staying with this form of purchase." |
